To fully understand and implement Xi Jinping's cultural thought, promote the overseas spread of fine traditional Chinese culture, and allow international students to experience intangible cultural heritage and traditional Chinese food, Tianjin University of Technology (TUT), at the call of the China Scholarship Council for "Perceiving China" theme activities, organized a study tour to the Tianjin Guifaxiang Eighteenth Street Mahua Culture Museum on the afternoon of March 6, 2024. The event was hosted by the International Student Office and organized by the School of Management, drawing over 10 international students from Russia, Guinea, Vietnam, and other countries.

The Guifaxiang Eighteenth Street Mahua Culture Museum features several sections that document the history of mahua (dough twist), from its origins and development to packaging upgrades and brand evolution. The tour began with a detailed narration of the name "Guifaxiang", which symbolizes "osmanthus fragrance, constant improvement, and good fortune", as well as an overview of the dough twist's history and production process.

Next, teachers and students watched the process of making stuffed dough twists and the production flow live. They also enjoyed a sand painting performance that showed the journey of Eighteenth Street Mahua from its invention to its current fame. This experience deepened their understanding of Chinese culinary culture. Finally, guided by craftsmen, the students tried their hand at making dough twists, known as "kneading dough twists". They experienced the unique craftsmanship of Tianjin's flavors. The atmosphere was lively as each student immersed themselves in the craft, feeling the essence of Chinese culinary culture.

Eighteenth Street Mahua is more than just a craft passed down through generations. It is a nationally renowned "Tianjin flavor" and a bridge connecting Chinese culture with the world. The "Perceiving China" initiative aims to help international students better understand China and spread its rich cultural heritage. We will keep organizing such activities for international students to experience Chinese culture. We are committed to building cultural confidence and sharing China's stories with more international friends.
