I. University Overview

Tianjin University of Technology (TUT) is a comprehensive university with a strong emphasis on engineering, featuring coordinated development among disciplines such as engineering, science, management, humanities, and the arts. It is also one of the key institutions under China’s “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program”. Founded in 1979, the university has grown rapidly alongside China’s reform and opening-up and the modernization of Tianjin. It is a key municipal university offering a complete higher education system that includes bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. TUT currently has 15 schools, offering 68 undergraduate programs, 4 first-level doctoral degree disciplines, 22 first-level master’s degree first-level disciplines, 13 professional master’s programs, and 4 postdoctoral research stations. The university boasts 20 nationally recognized leading talents, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Changjiang (Yangtze River) Scholars, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Excellent Young Scholars recipients, National Candidate of the “Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project”, and National Teaching Masters. At the provincial and ministerial levels, TUT has 136 high-level talents, including Distinguished Jinmen Scholars of Tianjin, Tianjin Distinguished Professors, Tianjin “High-End Talent Special Support Program” awardees, and Tier-One talents under Tianjin’s “131” Innovative Talent Training Program. The university also hosts 19 high-level innovative research teams, providing a strong talent foundation for its sustainable development.

The university upholds an open approach to education, placing great emphasis on collaboration and exchanges with universities and research institutions both at home and overseas. At present, it has established partnerships with 140 well-known universities and research institutions across 36 countries and regions. TUT has launched six Sino-foreign cooperative education programs, cultivating a large number of talents with a global vision. It has also established the first national “111 Program” project among Tianjin’s municipal universities—the Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base for New Energy Materials as well as a Ministry of Education International Cooperative Laboratory. The university has founded two Confucius Institutes and one Confucius Classroom in Poland and Côte d’Ivoire, and established the Belt and Road Central and Eastern Europe Research Institute. As the only university in Tianjin to join the China-Poland University Consortium, TUT conducts mutual student exchange programs with 12 Polish universities. By the end of 2023, Tianjin University of Technology had enrolled over 10,000 international students in total, offering degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The university provides a wide range of courses in its key disciplines and actively recruits international students from around the world.

III. Application Eligibility

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and meet the requirements stipulated in the Jiao Wai Han [2020] No. 12. Document Issued by the Ministry of Education.

2. Undergraduate applicants: Must have a high school diploma (those who have not yet graduated at the time of application must provide a pre-graduation certificate and obtain the diploma before enrollment); the applicant must be under 25 years old.

Master’s degree applicants: Must hold a bachelor’s degree and be under 35 years old.

Doctoral degree applicants: Must hold a master’s degree and be under 40 years old.

3. For programs taught in Chinese, applicants must have a minimum HSK Level 4 score of 180 or above, and provide a valid HSK certificate.

4. Applicants must be of good character and in good health, and must be willing to abide by the laws and regulations of China as well as the rules and regulations of Tianjin University of Technology.


IV. Application Documents

International applicants to Tianjin University of Technology must truthfully provide the following materials:

1. Application Form for International Students to Study at Tianjin University of Technology

2. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (color scan)

    Applicants must undergo all examinations as specified in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and fill out the form in Chinese or English (the form is printed by the Chinese health and quarantine authority). The form is invalid if any item is missing, if no recent photo of the applicant is attached, if the photo lacks an official seal across it, or if there are no signatures and official stamps from the attending physician and hospital. As the examination results are valid for six months, applicants should schedule their medical check accordingly.

3. Original Certificate of No Criminal Record

4. Original and notarized copies of the highest academic diploma and degree certificate (Graduating students must submit an official Pre-graduation Certificate issued by their current institution)

5. Original and notarized academic transcripts for all courses taken at the high school, undergraduate, or master’s level

6. Letters of Recommendation

    Applicants for master’s or doctoral programs must submit two letters of recommendation issued by professors or associate professors.

7. Study or Research Plan in China

    Applicants must submit a study or research plan written in Chinese or English (at least 500 words for undergraduate, 800 words for master’s, and 1,500 words for doctoral applicants).

8. Research Achievements

    Materials demonstrating academic or research ability, such as published papers, award certificates, or invention patents.

9. Language Proficiency Certificate

    Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must provide proof of Chinese language proficiency — an HSK Level 4 certificate with a score of 180 or above.

Notes: a. Incomplete or noncompliant materials will not be accepted.

b. All submitted materials are non-returnable, regardless of admission results.

c. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be accompanied by a notarized Chinese or English translation.


V. Selection, Admission, and Notification

1. From January 5 to May 1, 2024, applicants should contact the university via email or phone and send scanned copies of all application materials as email attachments to the International Student Office.

2. Between May 1 and May 20, 2024, the International Student Office, together with relevant schools, departments, and expert faculty members, will review all submitted materials. During the expert evaluation process, applicants may be required to participate in an interview or other forms of assessment to verify the contents of the application form and confirm the validity of the passport. Applicants who pass both the interview and evaluation will be considered pre-admitted candidates of the university.

3. The International Student Office will notify pre-admitted students via email. Those students must pay a non-refundable application fee of RMB 400 within the specified time. Failure to pay the application fee by the deadline will result in cancellation of pre-admission status.

4. Upon confirming receipt of the application fee, the university will issue official Admission Notices and Form JW202 and other related admission materials to formally admitted students.

VIII. Admission and Enrollment

1. The university will evaluate applicants’ overall qualifications through a review of their application materials, interviews, and other assessments, and will admit candidates based on merit. The final type and level of scholarship awarded will be determined by Tianjin University of Technology according to applicants’ comprehensive rankings and the number of scholarships available that year.


2. Applicants must accurately provide their contact email, phone number, and mailing address. During the admission process, applicants must respond promptly to university emails. Failure to reply in a timely manner or to submit supplementary materials within the specified deadline will be regarded as withdrawal from the application.


3. Once admitted, students are not allowed to change their major, duration of study, or language of instruction.


4. The university will issue an Admission Notice and a Visa Application Form for Study in China to admitted students for the purpose of applying for a study visa. Students holding non-study visas will not be permitted to register.


5. Admitted students must report to the university for registration at the time, place, and according to the requirements specified in the Admission Notice, generally in early September. Students who fail to register within two weeks after the designated enrollment date will have both their admission and scholarship qualification revoked.


6. Upon registration, students must present the original copies of their highest academic certificate, Foreigner Physical Examination Record and blood test report, HSK certificate, and other application materials. Those who fail to provide the required documents or whose verification results are unsatisfactory will have their admission and scholarship qualification cancelled.
